Lip Fillers Guide

Luxe Forté Med Spa — moss wall feature in Cherry Creek, Denver

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) gels specifically formulated for the lips. They add volume, define the lip border, restore hydration, or correct asymmetry — depending on the product used and the technique. At Luxe Forté in Cherry Creek, Denver, lip fillers are one of the most-requested injectables, and every lip appointment is performed by our RN injector, Elizabeth.

The important word in that definition is specifically formulated. Lip filler isn't just dermal filler used in a different spot. The products are chemically distinct — designed for tissue that moves constantly, stretches, and sits on a more vascular plane than cheeks or jawline.

Lip Fillers vs. Dermal Fillers — What's the Difference?

Both use hyaluronic acid, but the HA in lip-specific products is:

  • Softer — so the lip still feels like a lip, not a firm bump
  • More hydrophilic — holds more water, giving that natural plumpness
  • Lower concentration and lighter cross-linking — so it integrates with tissue that's constantly in motion

If a provider injects a stiffer cheek product into lips, you get the telltale firmness and unnatural shape that's often mocked as "duck lips." At Luxe Forté, we never cross-use filler categories. Dermal fillers like Juvéderm Voluma or Restylane Lyft go into cheeks, jawline, chin, and tear troughs. Lip-specific products go in lips.

The Three Lip Filler Products We Use

Elizabeth selects between three HA products based on your anatomy, lip shape, and the goal you come in with:

  • Juvéderm Volbella — the softest, most subtle option. Best for first-time clients, hydration-focused treatment, or fine lines around the mouth. It integrates so smoothly that many people can't tell you've had anything done — the improvement reads as "rested," not "fuller."
  • Restylane Kysse — the middle option and the most requested. Kysse moves naturally with expression, so your smile still looks like your smile. Ideal for moderate volume addition with a natural-feeling result.
  • Revanesse Versa Lips — the most structured of the three. Best for clients who want defined shape, border sharpness, or correction of a specific asymmetry. Holds its form more firmly than Volbella or Kysse.

None of these is "better" than the others. They're different tools for different jobs, and product selection happens during your consultation.

Who Gets Lip Fillers at Luxe Forté?

The most common motivations we see:

  • Restoring definition lost to aging. As the vermillion border softens in your 40s and 50s, subtle filler restores lip shape without adding bulk.
  • Correcting asymmetry — one side fuller than the other, a thinner upper-to-lower-lip ratio, or uneven corners.
  • Addressing perioral lines — the fine vertical "smoker's lines" that can appear around the mouth even if you've never smoked.
  • Adding volume for clients who've always wanted it — moderate enhancement in your 20s or 30s that still looks like you.
  • Hydration without volume change — for clients whose lips feel dry or thin but don't want noticeably bigger lips.

If you want enhancement without adding any volume, a lip flip (a small, strategic neuromodulator placement) may be a better fit on its own or as a complementary add-on to filler.

What Happens During Your Appointment

Plan on about 30 minutes total.

  • We review your goals, examine your lip anatomy, and choose the right product and placement strategy
  • Topical numbing is applied and left on for 15 to 20 minutes
  • The injection itself takes 5 to 10 minutes. The filler contains lidocaine, so the sensation softens after the first placement
  • Shape is visible immediately

Elizabeth uses either a fine-gauge needle or a microcannula depending on placement. The microcannula (a blunt-tipped tool) reduces bruising and is preferred for larger-volume work or for clients who tend to bruise easily.

Managing Swelling, Bruising, and Aftercare

The most common question: how bad is the swelling?

Honest answer: lips swell more than almost any other filler site because they're vascular and the tissue is thin. Expect:

  • Day 0 (appointment day): shape is visible. Swelling starts within hours.
  • Day 1 to 2: peak swelling. Your lips may look 15–30% bigger than your final result.
  • Day 3 to 4: swelling noticeably reduces.
  • Day 7 to 14: final shape settles.

Bruising is possible, particularly in the first few days. We reduce risk by asking you to avoid blood-thinning medications (aspirin, high-dose fish oil), alcohol, and intense exercise for 48 hours before your appointment. Afterward, avoid the same things for another 48 hours and also skip saunas, hot yoga, and pressing on the lips.

One important rule: do not book lip fillers within two weeks of a major event. The lips you leave with on appointment day aren't the lips you'll have when the swelling settles.

How Long Lip Fillers Last

Most lip HA lasts 6 to 12 months depending on:

  • Product. Kysse and Versa Lips tend to last longer than Volbella. Volbella is metabolized faster because it's softer and less cross-linked.
  • Metabolism. Some clients simply metabolize HA faster than others.
  • Lip movement. Very expressive speakers, singers, and wind-instrument players may see results soften sooner.

A touch-up every 9 to 12 months maintains the look.

Why the Injector Matters More Than the Product

The product is the tool. The outcome is almost entirely technique-dependent.

Conservative, experienced injectors think in tenths of a milliliter, not full syringes. They place filler where your natural lip anatomy wants volume, not where volume would be most obvious. The difference between beautiful, natural-looking lips and the overfilled look people worry about is the person holding the syringe — not the brand of HA.

At Luxe Forté, Elizabeth is our only injector. Every lip appointment — from a first-time 0.5 mL Volbella session to a Kysse maintenance touch-up — is hers. That's a deliberate choice. Consistent technique from one trained RN produces consistent results across your visits.
