What it is
CO2 laser resurfacing is the most aggressive laser treatment we offer - and the most effective for severe sun damage, deep wrinkles, acne scars, and significant texture concerns. Fractionated CO2 energy vaporizes tiny columns of damaged tissue while leaving surrounding skin intact to drive healing.
As the tissue heals, the body produces new collagen and fresh cells. The result is genuine skin remodeling - wrinkles fill in, scars flatten, pigmentation clears, and overall tightness improves substantially. This is not for minor concerns - we reserve it for clients with the downtime to commit and concerns that justify it.
Our Cherry Creek clinic at 36 Steele St, Suite 100 serves CO2 laser resurfacing patients from across Denver - including nearby Cherry Creek North, Country Club, Congress Park, Belcaro, Hilltop, and Hale, as well as Capitol Hill, Washington Park, and the broader Denver metro. Most clients can reach us within a 10-minute drive. Our Steele Street location sits across from the Cherry Creek Shopping Center in the heart of Cherry Creek North.
Many clients weigh related options like IPL and Laser Hair Removal. For dosing, longevity, and aftercare in depth, see our CO2 Laser Resurfacing Guide.
What to expect
Treatment takes 30 to 90 minutes with topical numbing. The laser feels hot - snapping sensations combined with heat. After treatment, your skin will be red, raw, and weepy for a few days. Peeling begins around day 3 to 7, and most people return to activities by day 7 to 10.
Your skin continues to improve for 3 to 6 months as collagen remodels. Results last years before touch-ups are considered. Sun protection afterward is non-negotiable - SPF 30+ daily, no exceptions.

Is CO2 laser painful?
We use topical numbing cream and sometimes nerve blocks to ensure comfort during the procedure. Most patients describe it as a hot, prickling sensation that's manageable with the anesthesia in place. The procedure itself typically takes thirty minutes to an hour depending on the treatment area.
What can I expect during CO2 laser recovery?
The first three to five days involve the most intensive healing - skin will be red, swollen, and oozing as it forms a protective crust. By day seven to ten, most patients see fresh pink skin underneath. Full redness resolution takes four to eight weeks depending on the treatment depth.
What post-treatment care is essential after CO2 laser?
Avoid sun exposure for 4-6 weeks after treatment and use broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen daily. Keep skin clean and use prescribed healing products. Avoid heat, strenuous exercise, and swimming for the first week. Follow your provider's detailed aftercare instructions to optimize results and minimize complications.
What should I do to prepare for my CO2 laser appointment?
Preparation for CO2 laser is crucial for optimal results and safety. Avoid sun exposure for at least 2-4 weeks before treatment, and stop using retinoids, vitamin C serums, and other active ingredients 3-7 days prior. Avoid waxing and chemical peels for one week before your appointment, and discontinue any medications that increase sun sensitivity if possible. On the day of treatment, arrive with clean skin free of makeup, sunscreen, and products, and plan to have someone drive you home as your vision may be temporarily blurred from numbing ointment.
Are the results from CO2 laser permanent?
CO2 laser produces long-lasting results because it stimulates the body's own collagen production, creating real structural changes in the skin. However, results are not completely permanent-aging, sun exposure, and lifestyle factors continue to affect skin over time. Most patients enjoy the benefits for 5-10 years or longer, especially with proper sun protection and skincare maintenance. Touch-up treatments every few years can help maintain optimal results as the skin naturally ages.
Can I combine CO2 laser with other treatments?
Yes, CO2 laser can be strategically combined with other procedures like microneedling, chemical peels, or injectables to address multiple skin concerns. However, timing is critical-treatments must be spaced appropriately to avoid overwhelming the skin's healing response. Many patients benefit from combining CO2 laser with injectables 2-4 weeks after treatment for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Your provider will create a customized treatment plan that staggers procedures for optimal results without compromising safety.
How long is the recovery time after CO2 laser treatment?
Recovery time varies based on treatment intensity, but most patients experience visible redness and swelling for 3-5 days. The skin typically appears significantly improved within 1-2 weeks, though continued improvement occurs as collagen remodels over 3-6 months. During healing, your skin will feel similar to a sunburn-it's crucial to follow post-care instructions, including avoiding sun exposure and using protective sunscreen. Some patients return to light activities within a week, though full normal skin function returns over several weeks.
What skin concerns does CO2 laser treat best?
Fractional CO2 laser excels at treating deep wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, surgical scars, sun damage, age spots, and rough skin texture. It's particularly effective for moderate to severe concerns because the laser penetrates deeper into the dermis than superficial treatments, creating more dramatic collagen remodeling. Patients often see dramatic improvement in facial rejuvenation, but the treatment can be used on the neck, chest, and hands as well for comprehensive skin resurfacing.
What is fractional CO2 laser resurfacing and how does it work?
Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing is an advanced skin rejuvenation treatment that uses concentrated beams of light to remove thin layers of skin in a precise, pixelated pattern. Unlike traditional lasers that treat the entire surface, fractional technology creates thousands of tiny treatment zones while leaving untreated skin between them-allowing faster healing. The controlled removal of damaged skin stimulates the body's natural healing response, triggering collagen production that continues improving your skin for months after treatment.
