XERF Skin Tightening Guide

Luxe Forté Med Spa — moss wall feature in Cherry Creek, Denver

What Is XERF?

If you've been looking into skin tightening and keep running into terms like HIFU, monopolar radiofrequency, or "non-surgical facelift," XERF is the next generation of that category — and it does something genuinely different from the devices that came before it.

XERF is the world's first FDA-cleared multifrequency monopolar radiofrequency system. It uses two frequencies — 6.78 MHz and 2 MHz — delivered simultaneously through a single handpiece to reach the superficial, mid, and deep structural layers of the skin, including the SMAS layer typically only addressed in surgical facelifts. Built-in ICD cooling and Wave Fit Pulse technology keep the surface comfortable throughout, which is why no numbing cream is required. The device was developed in South Korea by Lutronic and is distributed in the U.S. by Cynosure.

At Luxe Forté in Cherry Creek, Denver, XERF is one of our signature in-house treatments for a specific reason: it delivers real structural tightening — the kind that lifts the jawline and smooths the neck — without needles, incisions, or recovery time.

How XERF Works: The Dual-Frequency Difference

Traditional radiofrequency devices work at a single depth. They're good at one thing — maybe tightening surface skin, maybe stimulating deep collagen — but they can't do both in a single pass. That's why earlier RF treatments often required multiple devices or multiple sessions to address layered skin concerns.

XERF's dual-frequency design addresses that limitation directly. The higher 6.78 MHz frequency works closer to the surface, stimulating collagen and elastin in the dermis to smooth texture and improve tone. The lower 2 MHz frequency penetrates much deeper, reaching the SMAS layer — the subcutaneous muscular aponeurotic system that forms the structural scaffold of the face. When that layer is tightened, the entire face above it lifts.

Three depth levels and ten intensity levels give the treating practitioner precise control, so settings can be calibrated to your specific skin, the area being treated, and the degree of tightening you're looking for.

What XERF Treats

XERF is designed for the full range of face and body laxity:

  • Full face, jawline, and under-chin — restoring definition and softening jowling
  • Neck — smoothing vertical bands and horizontal creases
  • Body areas — abdomen, arms, thighs, and knees — tightening loose skin after weight loss or with age

It's equally effective for clients seeing the first signs of laxity who want to slow it down, and for clients who've already had other treatments (fillers, threads, microneedling) and want to add a structural layer to what they've built.

Who Is a Good Candidate for XERF?

The strongest candidates for XERF are:

  • Adults with early-to-moderate skin laxity on the face, neck, or body
  • Anyone who wants tightening without surgery, needles, or downtime
  • Clients who've exhausted topical skincare and want a more substantial result
  • Post-weight-loss or post-pregnancy clients looking to firm body zones

XERF is not a substitute for a surgical facelift when severe laxity is present. But for the range of skin tightening most people are looking for — where a surgical option feels like too much — XERF is purpose-built.

What to Expect During a XERF Treatment

You'll arrive with clean, product-free skin. No numbing cream is required; the built-in cooling in the handpiece keeps the surface comfortable throughout.

Your practitioner will move the XERF handpiece systematically across the treatment area while the dual-frequency energy heats the deeper tissue. Most clients describe the sensation as a warm, tolerable pressure — nothing sharp. A full-face-and-neck session runs about 60 minutes. Body zones take roughly the same.

An immediate tightening sensation is common as you sit up from the treatment bed — a subtle but noticeable firmness. There's no redness to worry about; mild pinkness, if any, fades within an hour or two.

The XERF Results Timeline

Here's what to expect after your appointment:

  • Immediately: a tightening sensation and subtle immediate lift
  • 2–4 weeks: visible lifting becomes more apparent as early collagen remodeling begins
  • 2–3 months: full collagen remodeling completes and results peak

A series of 2 sessions is recommended for optimal results. Many clients return annually for a maintenance treatment to extend their gains.

XERF vs. Traditional RF and Other Tightening Treatments

You may have heard of Thermage (monopolar RF), Ultherapy (HIFU), or RF microneedling — all popular skin tightening options. XERF occupies a distinct lane. It delivers multifrequency monopolar RF simultaneously, something none of the earlier single-frequency devices can do, and it reaches the SMAS layer without needles, unlike RF microneedling, which penetrates via microneedles.

If you're drawn to microneedling's combination of tightening and surface rejuvenation, our RF Microneedling treatment addresses surface concerns and scarring in a complementary way. For most clients focused on lifting and structural tightening with zero downtime, XERF is the more direct fit.

XERF Aftercare: What You Can (and Can't) Do

There is essentially no downtime. You can:

  • Wear makeup and return to work immediately
  • Resume your normal skincare routine the same evening
  • Exercise the next day

For the first 24 hours, skip very hot showers, saunas, and direct prolonged sun exposure on the treated area. After that, resume normal activity. There's nothing to hide, no peeling, and no visible recovery phase.
